Veiled Self

Veiled Self

Silk Veil, red wine. 2016.

In this performance I cover my face with a silk veil and red wine seeps excessively from my mouth, transforming the once pure piece of material with a gruesome stain.  Suppression of desire, forced modesty, and containment of the eroticized body are subverted through the act of staining this symbol of purity, the white veil. A transformation occurs after the physical and emotional wound has finished bleeding and the abject body has risen to the surface.  I become monstrous, however it is in this moment that genuine emotion is expressed, the body is experienced on the fine line between human and animal instinct, and ideological power over the body is confronted.  The veil of deception is lifted while horror and desire are experienced simultaneously.
